Located about 29 miles northwest of Austin in Williamson County, Liberty Hill is one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas. The Census Bureau estimated its population at 13,317 as of July 2025 — up from 3,646 at the 2020 census, an increase of more than 275% in five years. The city has held onto its Hill Country setting and its small historic core, but it is no longer the sleepy ranching town it was a decade ago. Master-planned neighborhoods, a school district opening campuses almost yearly, and a wave of national retail along the Highway 29 corridor have reshaped daily life here. For buyers, that means unusual range: modest resale homes and rural acreage on one end, new-construction estates in award-winning planned communities on the other. [Read more about Liberty Hill...]

Liberty Hill's natural setting remains one of its strongest draws, and the anchor is River Ranch County Park — 1,354 acres of former ranchland opened by Williamson County in 2023, with more than 20 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails, tent and RV campsites, an interpretive center, and access to the South Fork of the San Gabriel River. Two live oaks on the property, the Bell Oak and the San Gabriel Oak, are estimated at 500 years old.
Closer in, Liberty Hill City Park on County Road 200 has ball fields, a pool, and a splash pad. Lions Foundation Park offers a shaded walking loop, a playground, the public library next door, and the city's sculpture collection. Wetzel Park is a small fenced splash pad that stays busy with young families all summer.
Farther west, the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge protects habitat for the endangered golden-cheeked warbler; the Doeskin Ranch trailhead is roughly a 25-minute drive. Golfers have Crystal Falls Golf Club in Leander and the private Cimarron Hills Golf & Country Club in Georgetown within about fifteen minutes, with additional courses in Georgetown and north Austin.
Downtown Liberty Hill has attracted real investment in recent years. The 1871 Stubblefield Building at Main and Myrtle — hand-cut native limestone, restored in 1973 by sculptor Mel Fowler and a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark since 1976 — is believed to be the oldest surviving structure in the city, and today houses the Stubblefield Visitors Center and the Liberty Hill Chamber of Commerce. A few blocks east, the Liberty Hill Public Library sits alongside Lions Foundation Park.
The dining scene has expanded quickly alongside the population, with brewpubs, barbecue, and family restaurants opening across the historic district and along RM 1869 and Highway 29. The constant through all of it has been Dahlia Cafe, which has served what it calls dressed-up country cooking out of a 1930s farmhouse on RM 1869 since 2007, with live music under the oaks most weekends.
The city's artistic identity centers on the Liberty Hill International Sculpture Park. In the fall of 1976, sculptors from six countries spent two months in town creating monumental works from native granite, limestone, concrete, and steel — an entirely community-funded effort that earned Liberty Hill a Texas Arts Award the following year. The collection moved in 1987 to its present home spanning Lions Foundation Park and the adjoining Louine Noble Elementary grounds, where it remains free to visit. Each October the community gathers for the Liberty Hill Sculpture Festival, which marks the symposium's 50th anniversary in 2026.
The city's growth is most visible in its residential development. Santa Rita Ranch, a 3,100-acre master-planned community on the east side of town, has been the Greater Austin area's top-selling master-planned community for six consecutive years according to RCLCO, with 483 new homes sold in 2025 and roughly half the community built out. Amenities include multiple resort-style pools, a wellness barn, pickleball courts, miles of trails, and a full-time lifestyle program, along with Regency at Santa Rita Ranch, a dedicated 55-and-over neighborhood. Northgate Ranch, Bar W Ranch, Rancho Sienna, Lariat, River Bluff, and Lively Ranch add hundreds more homes across a wide range of price points and lot sizes.
Retail has followed the rooftops. Costco opened in March 2026 at US 183 and Highway 29 in the Liberty Hill Crossing center, with Liberty Hill's first Target under construction nearby. H-E-B anchors Bar W Marketplace to the east, the Walmart-anchored Ace Square center at Highway 29 and Ronald Reagan Boulevard is expected to deliver in late 2026, and the Gateway 29 development is bringing Hopdoddy Burger Bar, First Watch, and a mix of retail and services beginning this year. The weekly errand run looks nothing like it did five years ago.
Most of Liberty Hill is served by Liberty Hill Independent School District, which has grown alongside the city — roughly 10,500 students today, up from about 4,900 in 2019-20, with the district's demographer projecting more than 18,000 by 2033-34. For the 2026-27 school year the district operates eight elementary schools, three middle schools, and two comprehensive high schools, plus the Liberty Hill Success Academy. Lariat Trails Elementary and Legacy Ranch Middle School opened this August, along with the permanent campus for Legacy Ranch High School, which the district first opened as its second high school in 2024. Saddleback Elementary is scheduled for August 2027, with additional campuses planned beyond it.
One detail worth confirming address by address: portions of Santa Rita Ranch fall within Georgetown ISD rather than Liberty Hill ISD, so check the assigned schools for any specific property.
The district's athletic tradition runs deep. Liberty Hill High School football won back-to-back Class 3A state championships in 2006 and 2007 and has returned to the title game since; the Panthers' boys soccer team added a Class 5A Division II state championship in 2025.
Liberty Hill's roots reach back to the 1840s. A post office opened about three miles west of the present townsite in 1853, and the settlement moved eastward twice before landing where it sits today. Despite that long history, the city counted fewer than 1,000 residents at the 2010 census — its transformation into one of the region's fastest-growing communities is a genuinely recent story.
The appeal here is range. Within a few miles you'll find rural acreage and older homes at price points that are hard to match closer to Austin, alongside new-construction estates in master-planned neighborhoods that compete with anything in the metro. Commutes are real — Census data puts the average one-way trip for Liberty Hill workers at about 34 minutes — but US Highway 183, State Highway 29, and Ronald Reagan Boulevard connect the city to employment in Cedar Park, Leander, Round Rock, and Georgetown, with downtown Austin roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic.
