Due to its location near to the Texas Hill Country, the Driftwood community provides its residents with easy access to amazing views, invigorating hiking opportunities and refreshing natural swimming holes such as Jacob’s Well. Canyon Lake and the Blanco and Guadalupe rivers are also located nearby.

Among these restaurants is the iconic Salt Lick BBQ restaurant, which has been featured on the Travel Channel on two separate occasions. More than just a barbecue restaurant, Salt Lick also features a vineyard, garden room and mansion. It also regularly hosts music and other events. Other nearby attractions include the Lazy 8 Ranch, which is a famous ranch showcasing the wide variety of agriculture the state of Texas is known for producing. The ranch features traditional Texas plants and animals, all of which are raised on the ranch. Other attractions include the Driftwood Estate Winery and The Wildflower Barn Event Center, which is a popular choice for weddings in the area.

The Driftwood community is served by the Dripping Springs Independent School District (ISD). The district is served by five campuses, including Dripping Springs Elementary, Rooster Springs Elementary, Walnut Springs Elementary, Dripping Springs Middle School, and Dripping Springs High School. Dripping Springs High School has been consistently recognized by the organization Children at Risk as one of the top schools in Central Texas. It has also been recognized by The Daily Beast as one of the top 100 high schools in the nation and has received a “Silver Medal” designation from U.S. News & World Report for several years in a row. In addition to offering rigorous academics, the district also has an extensive extracurricular program with students, administrators and parents who are very involved in the educational process.

Sitting at an elevation of 1,043 feet north of the city of San Marcos, Driftwood is an unincorporated community within Hays County. The earliest settlers to the area arrived around 1850, though the community wasn’t really established until the 1880’s. A post office was established shortly after with a post office still in operation within the community today. Despite nearly shrinking into a ghost town in the early twentieth century, the community managed to rebound in the middle of the century before becoming nearly deserted once again in the 1970s. Today, the community has a population of around 2,500 people.
