Residents of Fifth and West are serviced by the Austin Independent School District (ISD), which serves most of the city of Austin. The district has consistently been ranked as Academically Acceptable by the Texas Education Agency. Schools serving the Fifth and West community include Mathews Elementary School, O. Henry Middle School and Austin High School. Austin High School, which is more formally known as Stephen F. Austin High School, is one of the oldest public high schools west of the Mississippi River. It was also the first public high school to open in the state of Texas. Located along the Colorado River, the school serves approximately 2,500 ninth through twelfth grade students.
