Fortune magazine has released its list of the top 100 places to work in the country and two Austin companies - Whole Foods Market Inc. and National Instruments - were included in the list.
Companies were selected to be included on the list according to pay, benefits, job security and a variety of other factors. In the end, a total of 13 Texas companies were included on the list, which was more than any state other than California. California has a total of 16 companies included on the list, but Whole Foods Market Inc managed to grab the 18th position while National Instruments came in at number 87 making it the 11th consecutive year the company has been included on the list. Other Texas employers to be included on the list were:
• Camden Property Trust - a Houston-based company that came in the tenth position
• Methodist Hospital System - a Houston-based company that came in the 17th position
• NuStar Energy - a Coppell-based company that came in the 21st position
• Shared Technologies - a Coppell-based company that came in the 33rd position
• Coppell - a Coppell-based company that came in the 36th position
• Scooter Store - a New Braunfels-based company that came in the 38th position
• TD Industries - a Dallas-based company that came in the 39th position
• USAA - a San Antonio-based company that came in the 45th position
• EOG Resources - a Houston-based company that came in the 67th position
• Men's Warehouse - a Houston-based company that came in the 68th position
• Balfour Beatty - a Dallas-based company that came in the 76th position
Interestingly, only 14 of the companies to be included on the list paid 100 percent of the health care premiums for their employees. Nearly one-third of the companies, however, offer on-site childcare services to their employees. Thanks to our troubled economy, eight-two of the companies included on the list eliminated positions this year while 19 of the companies offered fully paid sabbaticals to employees.
In the case of Whole Foods Market Inc, employees do enjoy the benefit of having 100% of their health insurance premiums paid. They are also included in vision, dental and life insurance plans and are automatically enrolled in a 401(k) retirement savings plan with company contributions after working for the company for 6 months. National Instruments also offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package and has earned a reputation for providing employees with a pleasant work environment. When the recession hit, company officers agreed to take a 10% pay cut and James Truchard, who is the founder and CEO of the company, has had a base salary of $200,000 for the past ten years.
