Elgin sits on US 290 about 25 miles east of downtown Austin, where the highway crosses SH 95 on the blackland prairie of northern Bastrop County. It is a railroad town with a brick downtown, the largest city in the county, and one of the fastest-changing places on the east side of the metro: new subdivisions on both sides of 290, a school district that has opened two campuses in two years, and farm-road acreage still for sale within a few minutes of the square. Homes for sale run from bungalows on the old grid to new construction and land. [Read more about Elgin...]

Downtown Elgin is a few blocks of brick storefronts around Depot Square, built between 1900 and the 1920s out of the town's own product and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 1872 freight depot, the oldest building in town, houses the Chamber of Commerce, and Veterans Memorial Park has held the square since 1912; a recent expansion added a playscape, a splash pad and an outdoor theater, and it is where the Hogeye Festival, the farmers market and the Juneteenth celebration set up. Elgin's two nicknames are both earned. Three brick plants made it the Brick Capital of the Southwest, and two are still running; the sausage that has been smoked here since the 1880s got the town the Legislature's Sausage Capital of Texas title in 1995. For work, US 290 is the road: most residents commute toward Austin, and the east-side employers of the last five years, from the auto plant on the Colorado to the chip plant in Taylor, are each within about 20 miles.
The city keeps more than 120 acres in six parks. Elgin Memorial Park on North Main Street is the one to know: 24 acres under a canopy of cedar elms planted in the 1930s as a gathering place for soldiers from Camp Swift, with an Edible Arbor Walk of fruit and nut trees, ball fields, courts, pavilions and the Elgin Recreation Center, opened in 2018. Morris Memorial Park has the municipal pool and a fishing pond, Thomas Memorial Park got a new playground in 2024, and the Shenandoah Soccerpark and Greenbelt adds 40 acres of fields and trail. Beyond the city, the Lost Pines and the Colorado River are 15 miles south at Bastrop, and Lake Bastrop's LCRA parks are between the two towns. Details are on the city's parks page and the Elgin Memorial Park page.
Elgin's growth runs along US 290 on both sides of the county line. Harvest Ridge, northeast of the high school, and Trinity Ranch, south of 290, are the two subdivisions large enough to have brought their own elementary schools, which opened in 2024 and 2025. Eagles Landing, Elm Creek, Saratoga Farms, Altamira and Creeks Crossing fill in around them, and the subdivisions on the Travis County side, where the street numbers run to five digits, carry Elgin addresses and sit inside Elgin ISD. The school district's second middle school, Legacy Oak, is under construction on FM 1704 for a fall 2027 opening, and a sixth elementary is funded but not yet sited. For the commute, US 290 is a divided highway through town, and the 290 toll road picks up at Manor for the run into Austin.
Elgin is in Elgin ISD, a single-high-school district with an unusual structure: five elementary schools, one sixth-grade campus, one middle school for seventh and eighth grade, and Elgin High School, which sits on County Line Road on the Travis County side of the district. Today the only assignment that varies by address is the elementary, and those zones were redrawn in 2024 and 2025 for the two new campuses. The district will have to draw middle school lines for the first time before Legacy Oak Middle School opens in 2027. The line to check first is the district boundary itself, since Elgin's 78621 ZIP code reaches property in neighboring districts. Confirm the assignment for a specific address on the district's map rather than on a listing.
Elgin exists because of a flood. The Colorado River rose in 1869 and pushed the Houston and Texas Central Railroad to re-survey its line to the north, through Manor; the railroad set a flag stop called Glasscock here in 1871, platted a one-square-mile townsite around a depot on August 18, 1872, and renamed it for its land commissioner, Robert Morris Elgin. The town was incorporated the next year and drew its first residents from Perryville, which the tracks had bypassed. A second railroad, the Katy, arrived in 1886 and brought eight passenger trains a day; brick-making began in 1884 and grew to three plants; and the cotton crop of 1900 kept five gins running at once. The brick downtown went up in the two decades after that. Elgin had 5,700 people in 2000, 8,135 in 2010 and 9,784 at the 2020 census, and it has grown quickly since.
Start with the lines. The city sits in two counties, the school district in three, and an Elgin address covers property in neighboring districts as well, so the district and the county on the tax bill are both worth confirming before anything else. Inside Elgin ISD, the elementary zone is the address-level question today, and the middle school zone becomes one in 2027.
Carrying costs vary more than list prices suggest. The newer subdivisions on both sides of 290 sit in their own utility districts on top of the county and school district levies, dues can run at more than one level, and acreage on the farm roads runs on wells and septic or a water supply corporation. Two homes at the same price can carry different monthly obligations, and the difference is not visible in the listing. Read the median carefully as well: Elgin closes a large volume of new construction every year, and a falling median often reflects what builders delivered that quarter rather than what an established home on the grid is worth.
Finally, verify your own address, including against any general description like this one. School boundaries here changed in each of the last two years and will change again, and city limits and utility districts do not follow the ZIP code. If you would like one of our Elgin Realtors to check a specific property against the current maps, or to compare Elgin with Bastrop and the rest of the county, reach out and we will set up a call.
