Established in 1881 and operating 129 schools, the district has consistently been rated as Academically Acceptable by the Texas Education Agency. Schools serving the downtown area include Mathews Elementary School, O. Henry Middle School and Austin High School. All three schools have received high rankings from GreatSchools.com. The oldest high school in the state of Texas, Austin High School serves approximately 2,500 students in grades nine through twelve. Private schools in the are include the Khabele School and the Austin School for Performing Arts.

The city of Austin is rich in history. European settlers are known to have been in the area since the 1700’s, while much of the state’s history revolves around the city of Austin. As the city has grown over the years, the number and variety of downtown condos has grown as well.
