Buda, Texas Lifestyle

Situated on the Hill Country Wine Trail, Buda also enjoys a budding wine industry that is quickly catching national attention. Many of those who are attracted to the town of Buda are also interested in living an active lifestyle. With 11 green spaces available throughout the town, residents enjoy use of nearly 30 acres per capita of parkland. The 51-acre Stagecoach Park features winding trails and playscapes. The community also hosts numerous festivals and other events throughout the year, including an art walk and a farmers market to support local businesses. The town also hosts the annual Weiner Dog Races every April.

Buda is also known for its eclectic downtown, which boasts a variety of charming shops and restaurants. The town is also home to a number of fast-growing small- and medium-sized businesses, which is partially due to the commercial development along the I-35 corridor. The Cabela’s sporting goods store, which provides products and services to assist with the town’s active outdoors lifestyle, is among the larger businesses situated in this area.

Buda is also an attractive option for families due to the highly-regarded Hays Consolidated Independent School District (CISD). The district consists of eleven elementary schools, five middle schools and three high schools serving over 14,000 students. Buda residents typically attend Jack C. Hays High School within the district.

Originally named Du Pre in 1881, the town of Buda changed its name after discovering that another Du Pre, Texas was already in existence. The name was changed in 1887 in honor of the area’s Hungarian immigrants, with Buda being a shortened version of Hungary’s capital of Budapest. Formerly a town with a strong agricultural presence, the economy was once dominated by dairy farming, beef cattle and cotton production. Commercial businesses were also established in the town’s early days, with a 150-foot wide “reservation” being placed between town lots and the railroad in 1881. This allowed the railroad to place buildings on parkland, thereby serving as the lifeblood of the town for several decades. Several businesses, particularly those that catered to railroad travelers, will developed along the railway.

The town of Buda was incorporated in 1948. By the mid-1980’s, the cement and craft industries had become an integral part of the town’s economy. Today, the town is a home rule city with a council-manager form of government. The town also has its own Planning and Zoning Commission, Parks Commission, Historical Commission, Board of Adjustments and Economic Development Corporation. Citizen groups include the Buda Downtown Merchants Association and the Buda Area Chamber of Commerce.

With its established neighborhoods, beautiful countryside and low crime rates, it is easy to understand why Buda is one of Austin’s fastest growing suburbs.
