Wimberley ISD is the school district for Wimberley, Woodcreek and the Wimberley Valley, the stretch of Hill Country along the Blanco River and Cypress Creek about 40 miles southwest of downtown Austin. It is one of the smallest districts on our list and the simplest: roughly 2,700 students on four campuses, one for each grade band, so there are no attendance zones to check inside the line. The line itself is what matters, because the district was carved out of Hays CISD and Dripping Springs ISD in 1986 and shares long, irregular borders with both. The district's central office is on FM 2325 on the west side of Wimberley, and the district covers the city, the neighboring city of Woodcreek two miles north, and the unincorporated valley around them: the RR 12 corridor north toward Dripping Springs, the ridges west of town toward the Devil's Backbone, and river and creek frontage on both sides of the Square. It reaches south across the county line into a piece of Comal County. Dripping Springs ISD adjoins it to the north, Hays CISD to the east, San Marcos CISD to the southeast and Comal ISD to the south; the full regional picture is on our Austin area school districts page.
Those borders are the whole story for a buyer. The 78676 ZIP code and a Wimberley mailing address do not stop at the district line, and the acreage market that makes this area what it is runs right across it: a tract north up RR 12, a property down FM 3237 toward Kyle or a ranch off RR 12 toward San Marcos can carry a Wimberley address and belong to a neighboring district. Wimberley ISD was created in 1986 precisely because the valley had been split between Hays CISD and Dripping Springs ISD, and the seams from that split are still where the surprises are.
Wimberley ISD runs four campuses, each serving every student in the district at that grade level. Campus pages and contacts are on the district's site.
Enrollment is about 2,700, and the district has grown slowly rather than in the thousand-a-year jumps its neighbor to the east sees, which is why its building program has been about expanding what it has rather than adding campuses.
There is one. Every student in the district goes to Blue Hole Primary, then Jacob's Well Elementary, then Danforth Junior High, then Wimberley High School, and the district does not draw internal attendance zones because it has nothing to draw them between. That is the structural fact this district offers that the larger ones cannot: an address inside the line means the same four campuses for the whole run, and a new campus opening somewhere else in the district cannot move a student's assignment.
Voters approved a $135 million bond in May 2025, the district's largest, with all four propositions passing. It builds an academic auditorium with choir and theater classrooms for the high school and junior high, expands band halls, gym entries and weight rooms on both secondary campuses, adds parking at Blue Hole Primary and the baseball and softball complex, replaces roofs, mechanical systems and lighting across the district, renovates Texan Stadium with seating for 4,000, and puts a shaded, lighted activity center over a new turf practice field. Construction is under way through the 2026-27 school year, starting around Danforth Junior High. What the package does not do is add a campus; the only forward-looking line in it is money for land for future expansion, with nothing named. The district told voters to expect roughly a three-cent increase in its debt tax rate.
Transfers matter more here than in most districts, because the district accepts students who live outside its boundaries. Out-of-district transfers are tuition-free, limited in number, decided case by case, and renewed year by year on the district's terms, with no bus service and a one-year wait before varsity eligibility. The details and the application window are on the district's out-of-district transfer page. A transfer is not a substitute for buying inside the line: it is renewable, not guaranteed, and the answer for a given grade in a given year is not something a real estate page can promise.
Check the district line before anything else. There are no zones to check inside it, so the entire school question for a Wimberley-area property is whether the parcel is in Wimberley ISD, Hays CISD, Dripping Springs ISD or San Marcos CISD, and the mailing address will not tell you. County appraisal records and the district's own map will.
Carrying costs on acreage run on a different basis than in the subdivisions to the east. Much of the valley is on private wells and septic, water supply corporations serve some areas and not others, and the groundwater district's rules apply to new wells. MUDs are rare here, so the tax bill tends to be simpler, but the well, septic and water questions belong in the option period. Read the median carefully as well: in a market this size a handful of river-frontage or large-acreage sales can swing it in either direction in a single quarter, so it tells you less than it does in Kyle or Buda.
Finally, verify your own address against the district's map, since boundaries are exactly the thing that changes here, and general descriptions go stale, including this one. If you would like one of our Wimberley TX Realtors to confirm which district a specific property sits in and what is on the calendar, reach out and we will set up a call.
