South Austin Lifestyle

Located within biking distance of downtown, South Austin puts residents within minutes of a wide variety of shopping and dining opportunities. The fashionable 2nd Street District is located nearby, as are the stores in Barton Creek Square Mall, and Southpark Meadows. Many local retailers and popular restaurants can be found on South Congress in the area known as SoCo.

South Austin also have ample opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. Among these is the Garrison District Park, which offers 40 acres of green space. During the summer months, the park offers a pool for residents to enjoy. The Barton Creek Greenbelt, Barton Springs Pool and Zilker Botanical Garden are also located within the South Austin region.

Residents of South Austin are served by the Austin Independent School District (ISD). Established in 1881, the Austin ISD operates 129 schools. The district is home to many schools that have been rated as Exemplary by the Texas Education Agency, while the district as a whole has been consistently rated as Academically Acceptable. Many of South Austin’s residents attend Travis High School, which serves as a Mentor Campus in the Texas Education Agency’s Mentor Program. The school also offers a variety of career-oriented courses, including video game design, culinary arts, forensic science, and nutrition. Elementary schools in the district include Barton Hills Elementary School and Dawson Elementary School, while middle schools include Bailey Middle School and Covington Middle School.

The South Austin region is defined as the area from Lady Bird Lake south to Slaughter Lane between I-35 and Loop 1 MoPac. Over time, the area has grown to be home to a variety of unique neighborhoods. Among these is Cherry Creek, which was developed in phases between the 1960s and the 1990s. The Cherry Creek community is characterized by its mature trees and eclectic mix of homes. Many of the older homes within the community have been updated to include modern amenities and design features. Construction within the Maple Run community took place during the 1980s and 1990s, while the Barton Hills community is one of the city’s most historically eclectic and interesting neighborhoods. South Austin is what many people envision when they think of Austin Texas Homes, and the area has been a terrific investment for many buyers over the years.

Offering an individualistic feeling within an independent atmosphere, South Austin is the ideal region for those who want to experience the unique scene that Austin is known for. Both cosmopolitan and homey, both hip and charming, South Austin is at the center of what keeps Austin weird.
