Lockhart ISD is the school district for Lockhart and most of northern Caldwell County, about 30 miles southeast of downtown Austin along SH 130. It covers 300 square miles and roughly 6,800 students, runs one comprehensive high school that every address inside the line feeds, and is in the middle of its biggest building stretch: a sixth elementary opened in 2025, the high school was expanded the same year, and a second middle school is under construction with the district aiming for 2027, which will split the secondary map for the first time. The district is based on Bois D'Arc Street in Lockhart, the Caldwell County seat, and it covers the city and the farm country around it in every direction: Dale, Lytton Springs and the Caldwell County side of Mustang Ridge and Niederwald to the north and west, Maxwell toward San Marcos, and McMahan, Delhi, Taylorsville and the other crossroads communities out east and south. Hays CISD adjoins it to the northwest, Del Valle ISD to the north, Bastrop ISD to the northeast, San Marcos CISD to the west, and Prairie Lea and Luling ISDs to the south; the full regional picture is on our Austin area school districts page.
The postmarks out here are famously unreliable. Dale addresses split between Lockhart and Bastrop ISDs, Niederwald carries Kyle mail and splits between Hays CISD and Lockhart ISD, Maxwell splits with San Marcos CISD, and Mustang Ridge splits with Del Valle ISD, so on the edges of this district the map is the only source that settles anything. The district sits on SH 130, which is the reason its growth arrived: the toll road put Lockhart within a half hour of the airport and the employers on Austin's east side, and the district describes itself as one of the fast-growth districts of the region.
Lockhart ISD runs ten campuses: an early education pre-kindergarten campus, six elementary schools, one junior high, a self-paced program high school and Lockhart High School. Campus pages and contacts are on the district's site.
Today the structure is simple. Six elementary zones are the only assignment that varies by address; every student then attends Lockhart Junior High and Lockhart High School, so the school question for a property inside the line is which elementary it feeds and nothing else. That is also why the junior high is the pressure point: it held about 1,500 students in early 2025, at 97 percent of capacity by the district's own count, with enrollment projected past the building's limit. When the second middle school opens, the district will draw middle school attendance lines for the first time, and an address's sixth-through-eighth-grade assignment will depend on where it is. Elementary zones were last redrawn when Borchert Loop opened in 2025.
The last two bonds tell the story of the district's decade. In November 2022 voters approved $71 million that built the sixth elementary, which opened as Borchert Loop in August 2025, and added roughly 500 seats to Lockhart High School, finished in January 2025. In May 2025 they approved a single $93.5 million proposition with 75 percent of the vote, the district's largest, funding Middle School No. 2, built for up to 1,200 students in grades six through eight, along with land for future campuses. Ground was broken in early 2026 and the district's stated goal is to welcome students in August 2027. Both bonds were presented as requiring no increase in the district's tax rate.
The second middle school is the change to plan around. Its zone does not exist yet, drawing it will divide the district's secondary map for the first time, and an address bought today for the junior high may be assigned to the new campus when it opens; that is a question to ask before the offer, not after. Beyond that, the land purchase in the 2025 bond is the district saying more campuses are coming without saying where, and nothing further has been called. Transfers between campuses and into the district follow the district's own rules and windows; check the district's site for the current process rather than any summary, including this one.
Start with the district line, then the elementary zone. On every edge of this district the mailing address disagrees with the map somewhere, Dale and Niederwald and Maxwell most of all, so county appraisal records and the district's own map are the only sources worth trusting for a specific parcel. Once a property is confirmed inside the line, the elementary is today's only address-level question, and the middle school becomes one in 2027.
Carrying costs vary more than list prices suggest. The new subdivisions on the city's north and west sides sit in their own utility districts on top of the county and school district levies, dues can run at more than one level, and the farm-road acreage runs on wells and septic or a water supply corporation. The district sets its own tax rate each year. Two homes at the same price can carry different monthly obligations, and the difference is not visible in the listing. Read the median carefully as well: Lockhart now closes a meaningful volume of new construction every year, and a falling median often reflects what builders delivered that quarter rather than what a house near the square is worth.
Finally, verify your own address against the district's map, since a new middle school zone is coming, elementary lines moved as recently as 2025, and general descriptions go stale, including this one. If you would like one of our Lockhart TX Realtors to check a specific property against the current maps and what is on the calendar, reach out and we will set up a call.
