Kyle, Texas Lifestyle

The town of Kyle boasts a number of attractions and amenities for residents to enjoy. Among these is the Balcones Fault Line Cave which is open for tours. Formed by an earthquake, the cave offers opportunity to get up close to native Texas wildlife. The beautiful Texas countryside is also just a short distance away, providing residents with ample opportunity to hike and otherwise explore the great outdoors. Popular activities enjoyed by Kyle residents include fishing and tubing on the Blanco, San Marcos and Guadalupe rivers as well as spending time on Canyon Lake.

The community also offers a number of conveniences and necessities, including the largest medical campus in Hays county and a three million square foot mixed-use retail space. Local businesses also abound within the community, while numerous transportation opportunities are located nearby. The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is located 25 miles north of the city, while San Marcos Municipal Airport is 12 miles to the south. The recently-completed I-45 toll road is located nearby, as are FM 150, FM 1626, SH 21, and SH 123. The MoPAC rail line also runs through the downtown area.

Residents of Kyle attend schools within the Hays County Consolidated Independent School District (CISD), which is located between Austin and San Marcos. The district consists of 11 elementary schools, five middle schools, and three high schools. Numerous teachers within the district have been awarded grants by the A+ Education Foundation, with approximately half of the district’s schools being rated as Recognized or Exemplary by the Texas Education Agency. Students within the school district are known for their high level of involvement with academics and extracurricular activities, while much of the staff has been recognized for its teaching excellence.

Originally founded in 1881 by Captain Fergus Kyle, the community of Kyle once relied largely upon the cotton industry. As the town grew, it became known as the “Gateway to Texas Ranch Country.” Therefore, it comes as no surprise that cows were occupying much of the space that is now the town of Kyle until just a few years ago.

Today, Kyle is the second largest town in the county of Hays and is governed by a Council/Manager form of government. The city council includes three at-large members, an elected at-large mayor, and three members who represent geographical districts. Each council member is elected to a three-year term.
