Hutto, Texas Lifestyle

Residents of Hutto attend school within the Hutto Independent School District (ISD). The district, which is one of the fastest-growing school districts in the country, currently boasts five elementary schools. Other schools in the district include Hutto Muddle School, Farley Middle School and Hutto High School. The district has received a “Recognized” rating from the Texas Education Agency. The high school also has strong extracurriculars, with the Hutto Hippos reaching the Class 3A Division II state championship in 2005.

The history of Hutto dates back to the 19th century, with the city being established in 1876. At this time, the International-Great Northern Railroad passed through land in the area that was owned by James Emory Hutto. It is this connection to Hutto that led to the name of the city. In 1876, Hutto sold 50 acres to the Texas Land Company of New York for a town site. Years later, local legend states that a circus train stopped in the town in 1915. At this time, a hippopotamus got out of a railcar and wandered to nearby Cottonwood Creek. The Depot Agent telegraphed nearby communities with the message of, “Stop trains, hippo loose in Hutto.” The animal was ultimately freed from the waters of the muddy creek and returned to the train car, after which time the high school adopted the hippo as its mascot.

Today, Hutto, Texas is among the fastest growing communities in Texas, with its population increasing by well over 1000 percent in the past decade. Due to the community’s rapid growth, it was dubbed “Hutto under construction” by its mayor in 2012. The community is currently undergoing a five-year plan to improve its parks, wastewater treatment and parks. To further assist with the city’s growth, it has also developed the first accredited Economic Development Corporation in the Austin area. The corporation is in charge of expanding brands and local industry in the area. Despite the city’s rapid growth, many of Hutto’s historic buildings remain standing within the city.

With its great location near Austin and its rapid growth, it is not a surprise that there is a great demand for homes in Hutto.
