Residents of Georgetown enjoy use of a variety of community amenities and conveniences. Among these are numerous golf courses, multiple parks and the 1,200 acre Lake Georgetown. Inner Space Caverns is also located in the community, as is Southwestern University. Founded in 1840, the private liberal arts college of Southwestern University is the oldest university in the state. Other attractions include art galleries, over 30 miles of hiking and biking trails, kid-friendly attractions, the Fountainwood Observatory and a number of bistros and bars. Nearby attractions include the Dell Diamond baseball field, the historic Salado and the Vineyard of Florence.
The well-preserved historic downtown area of Georgetown boasts a number of local businesses and restaurants offering unique shopping and dining opportunities. The town square offers some of the most attractive Victorian architecture in the state along with several historic buildings, including the Williamson Museum, the Palace Theatre and a 19th-century jail. The community is also home to the open-air Wolf Ranch Mall offering access to a number of major retail chains.
Georgetown is served by the Georgetown Independent School District (ISD), which serves more than 10,000 students. The district is served by ten elementary schools as well as Benold Middle School, Forbes Middle School, Tippit Middle School, East View High School and Georgetown High School, which is a two-time winner of the National Blue Ribbon Award.
Georgetown’s history dates back to prehistoric times with humans inhabiting the region since at least 9,000 B.C. The earliest known inhabitants can be linked to the Clovis culture, which is a Paleo-Indian culture that first appeared around 9200 B.C. The famed “Leanderthal Lady” skeletal remains were found in an area immediately southwest of the city. The Tonkawas, who were a flint-working and hunting people, were the first known historical occupants of the region. As settlers began to move into the region, the Comanches continued to raid their settlements until the 1860’s.
Georgetown experienced significant growth after the establishment of Southwestern University and the construction of the railroad, which took place in 1878. At this time, the economy depended largely on agricultural activity with Williamson County being the top producer of cotton in the state. Following recurring problems related to flooding, the county ultimately formed a dam on the north fork of the San Gabriel River resulting in the formation of Lake Georgetown. Today, 180 homes and buildings within the town of Georgetown are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With the unique architecture throughout the downtown area and its residential neighborhoods, walking through Georgetown is like taking a step back in time.
